OUR IDEAS

CPD in the media

Our ideas are often covered in the media. Our experts provide regular commentary and analysis to inform policy debates. For past media see our CPD in the news section.

Syndication and republication

We are happy to consider requests to re-publish or syndicate CPD articles or extracts from our publications. All our content is published under a Creative Commons license with attribution. To find out more about re-publishing, please email communications(at)cpd.org.au for details.

Media resources

CPD publishes short commentary and in-depth research by policy experts on a mix of topical and timeless issues. Our diverse stable of contributors includes prominent academics, politicians, current and former public servants, and independent policy analysts. We encourage our fellows and authors to look beyond the daily news cycle and dry, technical policy debates – to not only analyse the problems with current policies but propose viable alternatives. CPD publications are therefore the perfect “heads-up” for the policy debates of the future.

RECENT PUBLICATIONS

Find all our policy papers and reports here. Find out more about our two major research programs: the Sustainable Economy program and the Public Services program.

Recent reports are included below:

Big Society: How the UK Government is Dismantling the State and What is Means for Australia is the first instalment in the report ‘Big Society and Australia’, due for download here from 30/5/2012. The report presents a comprehensive analysis of the UK’s ‘Big Society’ policies and programs and examines their potential impact if adopted and implemented in Australia. We hope the report contributes to an informed debate about the merits of ‘small government’ ideologies and policies that often receive less than critical media and political commentary. DOWNLOAD the first instalment here.

Stocking Up: Securing Our Marine Economy is the first in a series of reports that will look at how different sectors of Australia’s economy can benefit from policies to preserve the environment and resources that sustain them. In a ground-breaking new report, CPD’s Sustainable Economy program reveals a shortfall in our official accounts of $25 billion per year. Our oceans contribute at least this much to the national economy in ecosystem services – such as carbon storage, fish nursery services and recreational fishing – free of charge. DOWNLOAD the full report here.

The State of the Australian Public Service: An Alternative Report analyses 20 years of opinion research on  the public service. The report finds evidence of a disconnect between frequent public service ‘bashing’ by politicians and commentators and generally positive views of the public sector in the general community. DOWNLOAD the report here.

A New Approach: Breaking the Stalemate on Refugees & Asylum Seekers is a report which comprehensively critiques Australia’s refugee and asylum policies and finds they are inhumane, ineffective and expensive. DOWNLOAD the full report here.

More Than Luck: Ideas Australia Needs Now  Edited by Mark Davis (author of Land of Plenty) and CPD Executive Director Miriam Lyons, More Than Luck is both a collection of ideas for citizens who want real change and a to-do list for politicians looking to base public policies on the kind of future Australia needs. This book shows the practical steps we can take to share this country’s good luck amongst all Australians – now and in the future.
