Fed gov blogging on open access right now!
Blink and you'll miss it. The first trial of a government consultation blog is now underway, and open access to public sector information is one of the topics. You can go comment at http://www.dbcde.gov.au/communications_for_busines...
As an aside, the use of a 'blog' (albeit a blog that has few of the useful features available out-of-the-box with most blogging software) for this kind of consultation really brings home the importance of choosing the right tool for the right job - I think the DBCDE tech team may have grabbed the first sharp pointy-looking thing to hand this time around. I suspect a forum might have done the job better - allowing the moderators to split off discussions into new threads & allowing posters to interact with each other without wading through endless pages of comments first.
The intro post also mentions that the 'Digital Economy blog team' will be posting 'every couple of days'. Now I know that CPD is in the running for the least-frequently-updated-blog award itself, but given that the consultation's only going to run for two weeks you'd think the turnaround of responses could be a little faster. I wonder if that's one of the hitches of government blogging at work - the need to go and get sign-off from the right people before every post must really slow things down.
CPD report on access to PSI in Oz
The fabulous Barry Saunders (http://investigativeblog.net/) is down from Queensland for a couple of weeks working on an upcoming CPD paper on access to public sector information in Australia. If you have ideas you'd like to send his way you can reach him at research(at)cpd.org.au
