Ben Eltham: Hollywood dreams don’t come cheap

CPD Fellow Ben Eltham comments on the recent events surrounding the New Zealand based production of ‘The Hobbit’. The New Zealand government is seen as having capitulated to the demands of a big Hollywood studio, rather than risk losing the boost to economic activity that would occur if production moved elsewhere.

“When it comes to foreign-financed movies and TV shows, old-fashioned industry policy of the sort that benefited foreign auto manufacturers is alive and well.”

Australia is similarly locked in a ‘race to the bottom’ to attract foreign studio investment, to the continuing detriment of local producers, screen-writers and directors.
