Katharine Murphy picks up CPD’s report into media concentration in Australia, commissioned by Avaaz. As “Australia has one of the most concentrated newspaper publishing markets in the world”, this has serious implications for the quality, variety, and freedom of Australian media, freedom of speech, and the critical issue of media transparency.

With the News International scandal still unfolding in Britain, and News Ltd. holding 70% of Australian newspaper market-share, the need for a parliamentary inquiry into ownership and regulation has reached critical mass.
