Around 40 people from government, business and academia joined the fourth Australia-Indonesia Energy Transition Policy Dialogue meeting on 29 August. Participants joined in person in Jakarta and Canberra as well as online to discuss the social dimensions of a just energy transition across Indonesia and Australia.
This dialogue recognises that if not managed well, the energy transition has the potential to exacerbate inequality, with vulnerable groups facing greater risks from the economic and social changes that occur. More focus on the social and human impacts of the transition is critical in both countries, ensuring that individuals and communities are able to thrive.
Session 1 focused on managing the social and human dimensions of the energy transition, emphasising the need for a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach. We started by addressing the challenges in translating bilateral cooperation agreements on energy transition from rhetoric into actionable results. The discussion then explored the social impacts of the transition in both Australia and Indonesia, using a people-centred approach to identify common areas of focus. We worked together to identify collaborative strategies that mitigate potential negative impacts and develop policies that ensure the transition benefits communities in both countries.
Session 2 focused on identifying opportunities for the next Indonesian government to prioritise a just energy transition. We began by hearing from members of the incoming Indonesian government as they outlined their emerging priorities. Participants then engaged in a plenary discussion to explore these priorities and identify additional opportunities for the new government to advance a just transition. We examined how these priorities connect with the policy proposals discussed in the previous session, aiming to build a cohesive strategy that addresses both social and energy-related challenges.
Participants met in Jakarta, Canberra and online for the 4th Dialogue
This dialogue was the fourth of its kind, following previous meetings in October and March 2023 and December 2022, and is part of an ongoing collaboration between CPD and Climateworks Centre. We are now planning the fifth dialogue meeting in early 2025.
